Walking along the Praya around midday today – when it was hot with intense sun – I was again struck by the expanses of open areas with bricks and/or concrete, with little shade.
I know it’s not easy growing trees along the waterfront – tropical storms and typhoons sometimes come along and bash them down. But open areas like this seem designed for robots rather than humans – maybe by people in somewhat remote, air-conditioned offices, who rarely or never walk here.
Even at this relatively new "square" there is minimal shade – again, by designers in love with concrete, who added a splash of greenery (but note: people must keep off the grass).
Here, by contrast, pople are relaxing under a couple of big old shade trees.
